Panthers Remain Undefeated (Sports)

By Jason Marek

On paper, this past Friday’s district match-up of undefeated teams looked to be a tough game for Blanco as they traveled to Karnes City to face the Badgers in a game that proved to have major implications towards winning the district championship. However, after one half of play, the Panthers proved to be way more than the Badgers could handle as Blanco remained perfect on the year improving to 8 and 0 with a 42 to 0 victory. In addition, the Panthers recorded their 3rd consecutive shut-out of a district opponent while taking over sole possession of first place in the district with just two games remaining.

In the opening quarter of play, the Panthers took an early lead when McKay Adamson completed a 64 yard 11 play drive with a 1 yard touchdown run on Blanco’s first possession of the game. Justin Requenes converted the first of 6 PAT’s on the night to put Blanco on top 7-0 at the end of the first.

In the second quarter, the Panthers extended their lead going into halftime with a pair of scoring runs from 1 and 16 yards by Adrien Dominguez. Requenes added two more conversions to make the score 21-0.

During the third quarter, Adamson connected with Colton Elrod on a 3 yard pass play while Dominguez scored his third touchdown of the night with just seconds remaining in the quarter on a 67 yard run. Again, Requenes added two more conversions to increase Blanco’s lead to 35-0.

The Panther defense continued to dominate and shut down the Badger offense in the third quarter. Blanco’s offense added one more score on the night with a 13 yard run by Ryan Ronces. Requenes converted his 14th consecutive PAT over a two game stretch to make the final score 42-0.

On the offensive side of the ball, Blanco totaled over 330 yards with 303 coming on the ground. Leading the way was Adrien Dominguez with 146 yards on 17 carries while scoring 3 touchdowns. Colton Elrod also pitched in 99 all-purpose yards to go with a touchdown, and Blanco picked up 20 first downs.

Defensively, the Panthers shut-out one of the districts most potent offenses while allowing just 5 first downs and only 59 yards in total offense. Blanco forced two interceptions by Logan Dodd and Carson Kipp in addition to forcing 5 punts.

The Panthers remain perfect in district play at 3 and 0. Blanco needs just one more win to clinch the district championship. They will look to wrap up the title this Friday as they head south to take on the Poth Pirates. Poth, who was the preseason favorite to win the district, has lost their last two games to Stockdale 15-14 and Nixon-Smiley 36-34 after opening district play with a 48-7 win over Natalia. For the year, the Pirates are 4 and 3. Kick-off at Poth is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
