Have you ever considered adding built-in items to your home (new or remodel)? So many items can be done. I once listed and sold a home, where the owners had lived in a RV for awhile. They knew how to pack and travel, so when they decided to build, they utilized a lot of the ideas from the RV living.
In their small home, approx. 1000 square feet, they added several features; a thick wall to open as their shelves for spices, etc, a wall ironing board, a chute to the laundry room cabinet from the master closet, a chest in the closet for clothes, and a desk in the den for computer and writing. One bedroom had an upper closet with a built in cabinet for storage and a place for guests to put a suitcase. Everything was compact and usable creating an absolutely amazing functional home.
If you are remodeling or just adding on, here are a few things that help. The wall kit for the ironing board and iron is a must in my opinion. If you have a breakfast area, a bench with a seat is a good storage place. Adding a bench in a kids room for storage is also a great idea. Closet organizers can be metal or wood and there are many designs to select from, or you can design your own. You can also add a chest in the closet to give you more room in your bedrooms. Built in book cases and desks always come in handy.
If you are designing your home, keep the above items in mind and include some of the following things too. You might want to include building more cabinets in the utility room. They are a great area for storing items out of the way. If you have an office, a wall with built in shelves and cabinets adds a great touch. Game rooms can always use a sink, cabinet, and maybe those built in benches for storing games or other items. Built in shelves and cabinets are also nice around the fireplace in the family room. Coves for displaying art and hidden rooms are also options to consider.
There are so many more things that can be built-in, think of the possibilities! These are just a few samples to help you start thinking about what you can do.
