Do you remember last year when Yalene Hobbs was researching "The Cow Lady,” Miss Annie? Her research is fascinating. One clue led to another, then another, then another. Yalene never gave up and her findings are like reading a novel...especially with Yalene explaining how one person led to someone else who knew more. It was enlightening to learn about Miss Annie and also be reminded of how people used to live. Annie's second husband was Thom Darling, Yalene's dad's uncle (her first husband got shot stealing watermelons.) While living in the city of Blanco, Annie kept her cow on a rope and staked it at different locations to graze during the day. A neighbor and friend, Lem Wagner, looked after her. One story was that Lem's son, Leroy, would stake the cow to graze on his way to school. Dorothy Wagner Smith would sometimes ride it when she and Leroy were walking it toward the school. Annie told Pearl Greebon that her last husband, Richard Jones, had given her a pair of saddle oxfords and told her to be buried in them to keep the grass burrs from her feet. Thank you, Yalene, for sharing. Great research!
