The first weekend of November has always been the big hunters’ day for deer hunting in the Hill Country. Well, something new is rolling into Blanco this year: historical chuck wagons, with cooking competitors in full period costume as well as many celebrity guests. The inaugural Blanco Western Showcase will be held at the Buggy Barn Museum and Carriage Hills Ranch on November 2-4. Organizers and volunteers have been working nonstop to get the many buggies and authentic historical equipment from days gone by ready for public viewing.
Radio KKXY 680 AM, sponsor for this event, invited Dennis Moore, who already has squeezed in more to his busy schedule, and Barby Harris O’Brien (BlancoBarby) to their production studios last Saturday morning to join famous radio disc jockey Jerry King for a live on-air discussion. Radio personality Roy Holly invited Dennis to talk “about the Blanco area” and the Buggy Barn Museum, the Texas Hill Country’s newest tourist attraction. Dennis, coming from a fifth-generation Blanco family, was definitely the right person to ask about Blanco.
Many events are planned for the weekend, including the Famous World Championship Knife and Tomahawk Throwing exhibition and Bowie Knife Collection, Dan Mink (The Rhinestone Roper), Jack Dagger, Western music featuring Jean Prescott as well as K.R. Wood of Camp Cookie, a longhorn that can be ridden, and lots more. There will be art and craft vendors and food specialty vendors on-site as well. And, of course, the chuck wagon cook-off and dinner on Saturday evening are not to be missed, with a dance following under the Hill Country stars. Come out and watch these masters of the trail ride provide a fantastic meal see how it was done in years gone by. Take a ride on one of the very many authentic buggies. Rain or Shine.
