By John Kinslow, minister, Blanco church of Christ

A man worked as a greeter at Wal-mart and was very good at his job, always friendly and helpful, but he was also almost always late by five, ten, or fifteen minutes. His boss called him in to discuss his job, and told him that he really did a good job but he needed to work at being on time. The man said he was working on correcting the problem. His boss said, “I understand you were in the military, what did they say when you were late.” He said, “well, most of them said, ‘Good morning Admiral, can I get you some coffee?’”

It’s very impressive to see someone from a high position, or greatly educated, or very wealthy, in a position of humble service, very unassuming and willing to perform any task, and when we find out more about them, we respect them all the more. The Lord Jesus, despite His authority and divine nature, is like this. He did not come to earth “to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). We also should have this way of thinking in us that was in the Lord (Philippians 2:5).
