Imagine walking through model homes and what do you normally hear or say? “Oh wow, I’d like that.” So when I started thinking about this and noticing the things that get the “Oh wow,” usually are: Kitchens, Master Bath, Closets, Home Theater / Man Cave, Wine Cellar, Laundry Room/Mud Room, Patio/Pool/Landscaping seem to win. Then I ask, Why?

Kitchens can have so many features, materials, lighting, and various appliances. Most of the comments come from the big kitchens with island, cook tops, double ovens, lots of cabinet space, lots of counter space, big pantry, bright, open, and top of the line appliances.

The Master Bathroom has that feel of temptation. Jacuzzi tub with window and candles; large walk-in shower with an open feel, benches, multiple shower heads and more; double vanities with lots of cabinet space, large designer mirrors, and a place to sit at the mirror. Some include a chandelier over the tub and even a TV or fireplace for the ultimate feel.

Talk about closets, the bigger the better. Having a closet big enough for him and her or separate can work. Within the closets, they have built-in shelves, drawers, shoe racks, bench, mirror, and bright lights. Upper levels have levers to pull down the rack of clothes. Always vented and no window.

I put the Home Theater and Man Cave together. A home theater can be shared by the family. Having comfortable seats, big screens, dark walls, adds to the ambiance, whereas the Man Cave can have a theater and whatever the man likes to do. It can include a bar, bathroom, trophy wall, sound system, pool table, and more.

Wine Cellars are really popular. They can be small or large. Personally, I like the ones that are large enough to have a small table, walls from floor to ceiling for bottles, with a nice designer door. Include racks for glasses and a work area. You can even incorporate a small bar outside the cellar area.

Laundry Room/Mud Room just doesn’t sound glamorous, but they can give a wow factor. Lots of new fancy washer and dryers make them stand out. But add the built-in counters with sinks, cabinets, clothes hanging area, utility closet, dog bathing area, a bench for taking off those shoes, and locating it at the back entrance area makes it practical.

Finally, the Patio/Pool/Landscaping can top off the looks of your home. Starting with Landscaping, if you have your front and back yard done, how inviting would that be? Curb appeal is always important in the front. The back can be done for relaxation. Include trees and plants you like and that are common in your area. Lighting, pathways, water features, fire pits can create an escape kind of place. Add in a nice Patio for entertaining, with table and chairs, bar-b-que pit, cover, ceiling fans, and water misters. A pool is always a nice feature. So many “Oh Wow” designs for the pool and hot tub area – dream on.

I’m sure there are many other “Oh Wow” features that you like or see; these are just a few that came to mind, ones I thought I’d share. So when you are building or remodeling, think about what your “Oh Wow” feature might be.
