The much needed rain made for some muddy challenges during courthouse gala weekend but the spirits of the participants and the organizers never dampened. All events went on as scheduled, if not exactly as planned.
The Friday night showing of True Grit, originally planned for a large screen on the courthouse lawn, had to be moved indoors to a smaller screen inside the courthouse. Several people remarked that this was actually a fitting alternative since that is where the courtroom scenes were filmed. The American Legion provided the free popcorn and Stripes donated soft drinks, water, and ice. The soft drinks and water were sold for $1 each, with all proceeds directly benefiting the Old Courthouse.
Saturday’s festivities began with an exciting and fun Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament. The third annual tournament was chaired this year by Mable Rollins. Jerry Cooley of Hill Country Poker did a great job of conducting the tournament and attendance was the best ever. The grand price—a V.I.P. trip to Las Vegas—was won by Jon Brieger!
Even really muddy boots couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of guests at the evening gala. Despite a brief but torrential downpour that turned part of the venue into a mud pit, over 200 guests were in attendance and reportedly enjoyed a great evening. One of the highlights of the evening was a superb dinner by Riley’s Custom Catering. The Rileys and crew outdid themselves with a delicious appetizer table, followed by a mouth-watering prime rib dinner and New York-Style Cheesecake for dessert.
Other highlights of the evening included a lively auction and raffle. The silent auction tables were loaded with interesting and popular goods and services.
The weekend events, combined with generous donations, raised over $20,000 for the continuous operation and renovation of the Old Courthouse. The funds could not have come along at a better time, as the elevator was recently struck by lightning and is need of extensive repairs. The roof is also in need of some work and the stones are in need of re-pointing. Like any old, historic building, there is always going to be something in need of repair.
