Have you noticed the improvements at Yett Park? There is an attractive and safe series of steps outside the restrooms by the rodeo grounds. The new steps are an Eagle Scout Project that was recently planned and executed by Life Scout Kendall Hartmann as he works towards earning his Eagle Scout Rank. The work was done during the weekend of April 12th – 13th.
Kendall found a project that would benefit the community. Kendall had many opportunities to use the leadership and planning skills that he has been developing as a Scout. There were plans to draw and to get approved and supplies to gather. The width of the landing had to be determined to fit the slope of the hill. Some of the most important planning was spent in making sure that there was enough help to finish the project. The construction of the project called for leveling and excavating the ground, cutting railroad ties, moving and positioning the railroad ties, hammering rebar into the ties, and smoothing and leveling the ground to place the railroad ties.
Kendall called on Scouts, friends, and family for help. Blanco Heating and Cooling loaned a backhoe for excavating the dirt and gravel. Chain sawing of the railroad ties was done by adults, but moving the ties into place and hammering in the spikes was accomplished by the Scouts. Kendall’s project was well executed and is an important contribution to better and safer access to the Pavillion and restroom facilities from the rodeo arena side.
