The quarterly Court of Honor for BSA Troop 497 was held February 17 at the Blanco United Methodist Church. Attending were parents, family, and friends of the Boy Scouts along with a few Cub Scouts and parents. The Cub Scouts are WEBELOS who will be Crossing Over from Cub Scout to Boy Scouts in May. Also attending were Scout Leaders from the Capitol Area Council and from the Hill Country District.
The Scouts of Troop 497 were awarded the Merit Badges they had earned at Winter Camp at Lost Pines and in classes held at Troop meetings since the last Court of Honor. The badges included: Climbing, Rifle Shooting, Communications, Environmental Science, Citizenship of the Nation, Emergency Preparedness, Radio, Shotgun, Family Life, Music, Archery and several others. Each Scout decides for himself which Merit Badges he will work on. There are 13 Eagle required Merit Badges and 18 other Merit Badges to obtain for a total of 21 to be able to earn Eagle Scout. One new Eagle required Merit Badge (Cooking) has been added in 2014 but the total of 21 badges remains the same.
There was a Special Presentation to Judge Don Barnett for his caring and dedication. Judge Barnett volunteers to teach several of the Eagle Required Merit Badges such as, Citizenship of the Community, Citizenship of the Nation, Citizenship of the World and Personal Management. He gives selflessly of his time and energy. Thank you, Judge Barnett.
In another ceremony on the same night, Joe Lockwood, Scout Master, and Niki Lockwood, Committee Chair, were awarded their Beads and Scarves for Wood Badge. Both have been working toward this completion since attending a 6 day Wood Badge training camp. Joe attended in October of 2013 and Niki attended in February of 2014. This is a BSA Adult Leadership Training course that culminates after the attendees set goals that they must complete within 18 months of training camp. For those who complete these goals, the final presentation of “Beading” is bestowed.
Boy Scout Troop 497 meets on Monday nights at the United Methodist Church. Boys between 11 and 18 are welcome to participate.
