Surrounded by her family, Lucia "Lucy" R. Uselton died in Houston at her son’s home on Sunday, February 16, 2014. Lucy was preceded in death by her husband Whitey Uselton and son Fred Vasquez.She is survived by sons Abraham Vasquez and his wife Susie, Miguel Vasquez, and David Vasquez, and her beloved nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
After a 33-year career with Serafy Laboratories in Brownsville, Texas, she married Whitey Uselton in 2000 and retired to the Texas Hill Country. Lucy and Whitey were long-time active volunteers at the Blanco Good Samaritan Center and instrumental in the success of the organization. Lucy served as volunteer center director and treasurer for many years.
To those who have relied on the services of Good Samaritan, Lucy was a compassionate listener who understood the problems they faced and who helped them feel comfortable in asking for help. Dolores Rodriguez offered this comment: “I’m so sorry in my heart to learn of Lucy’s passing. May God hold her in His Holy Kingdom. She helped me with everything – not only with food, but with advice and encouragement. She was always so kind.”
“She was one of those few people in whose presence you felt love,” said Virginia Castro.
“A lot of people loved her, especially the little kids," said Maria Barraco. "She was a very compassionate person; she made people feel at home. It’s always hard to say goodbye, even when we know she is so welcome with the Lord.”
Lucy’s funeral will be held in Brownsville at a date and time to be determined. Arrangements there are being made by Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista. A Mass will be offered for Lucy at St. Ferdinand’s Catholic Church in Blanco by volunteers at Good Samaritan on Friday, March 14, at 8 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Blanco Good Samaritan Center.
