Have you been wondering about the recent planting and construction activities taking place in the large field at Blanco State Park? On January 14, a group of enthusiastic volunteers met at the park to begin Phase 1 of an exciting initiative to create a Naturescape Activity Center for children to interact with nature. This play area will be constructed with local, natural materials and native plants and will include wildflower meadows, shade trees, play equipment, and other features that encourage imaginative play. The Naturescape Activity Center will also provide opportunities for park ranger interpretive programs on the importance of protecting the environment, on water and land conservation, and on plant identification and animal habitat.

Blanco State Park hosts a variety of educational programs specifically for children throughout the year, including Children’s Day in the Park in May, as well as other programs for both children and adults. The Naturescape Activity Center will provide yet another way for children and families to enjoy the great outdoors at Blanco State Park and will provide a wonderful enhancement to the community. The Naturescape Activity Center is a project of the nonprofit organization, Friends of Blanco State Park, in cooperation with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department employees and other local organizations and individuals. If you would like to work on this fun and exciting project, please send an e-mail to Marilynn Lageman at mjlageman@gmail.com and you will be contacted about future volunteer days.

In other news, Blanco State Park is scheduled to be stocked with 4,000 rainbow trout this season. The first of four stocking dates was December 13 of last year, and the last stocking date is scheduled for February 7. There is no minimum or maximum limit on length, but the daily bag limit is five. Come on down to the park and try your luck!
