Blanco ISD honored veterans today as part of Veterans Day activities scheduled across all three campuses.
“We are honored to recognize and show gratitude to our veterans,” said Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford. “These ceremonies and activities help impress upon our students the service and contribution our veterans have made for our freedoms.”
Middle School
The middle school conducted a flag raising ceremony at 8:05 AM. The Blanco Panther band played the national anthem, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Principal Bill Luna made some remarks, and the band played a medley of the armed services songs.
Visiting veterans and veteran BISD employees were also recognized. The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence and the playing of Taps.
High School
The high school hosted a reception and breakfast for veterans in the cafeteria.
Following the reception, veterans were special guests to a school-wide “silent ceremony” assembly in the gym. The assembly included introductory remarks, the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, a reading of parts of the 2012 Presidential Proclamation, a viewing of the patriotic video “American Anthem,” and a slideshow with commentary based on the song “Ragged Old Flag.”
“The program was well received by students, staff, and honored guests,” said FCS teacher Amy Petri. “We would like to extend another thank you to our veterans and their families for their sacrifice and commitment to the cause of peace and freedom.
Elementary School
Veterans were treated to lunch at the elementary school.
“We were honored to have the opportunity to show appreciation for those who have done so much for our country,” said elementary principal Linda Romano. “Under the direction of our music teacher, Mrs. Mollberg, fourth graders performed a wonderful tribute to our guests.”
“A second grade student expressed it best in a writing activity decorating the entryway: “Dear Veterans—thank you for making our country a great place to live. You have risked your lives for our freedom.”
