The citizens of Blanco turned out in record numbers to support their historic courthouse on October 19 at the Texas Hold’Em Poker Tournament followed by the 23rd annual “True Grit” Gala. Both events raised money for the ongoing upkeep and restoration of the beloved Blanco landmark built in 1885.
The Gala was attended by over 200 persons and began with appetizers and drinks served on the lovely lit up courthouse lawn. A period horse carriage and antique auto loaned by Dennis Moore set the stage for a “step back in time” as guests arrived and were greeted by music courtesy of James Watson and Jaxon Smith. Attendees were tempted by over 140 silent auction donations displayed inside the courthouse, including such unique items as a pet treadmill, a propane barbecue grill, and a Real Ale neon bar sign. Numerous gift certificates and donations of services by local businesses were also available to the highest bidder.
Following the dinner served upstairs by Cooking it up with the Carles, guests were treated to the lively auction antics of Jill Herbert of Boots N Lace Auctioneers, Grand Junction, Colorado. Among the many live auction items donated were a pair of miniature horses, a progressive wine dinner for 8 courtesy of Sullivan Street Caterers, Dorothy Tropy’s Famous Cake and a Marlin deer rifle from Baker Guns.
The generosity of the community was overwhelming and the True Grit Gala owes its success this year to the hard work and dedication of many volunteers and especially to Gala chair persons Cindy Holder and Sharon Herbert.
