Blanco County Association of Retired Educators (B-CARE) installed new of?cers at the April 25th meeting at Papa Joey's Restaurant. Serving for the 2013-2015 term are President Mary Nabers; First Vice-President Carolyn Boydston; Second Vice-President Joan Winters; Treasurer Cindy Sultemeier; Secretary Joy Brussel; Legislative Chairman Carole Smith; Retirement Education Chairman Kathy Carriker; Healthy Living/Books for Children Chairman Henrietta Smith; and Immediate Past President Jan Booth.
All members of the Teacher Retirement System (TRS)--teachers, teacher aides, food service staff, librarians, custodial staff, nurses, maintenance staff, administrators, and administrative assistants--are eligible for and welcomed to membership in the state-wide Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) and B-CARE, the local chapter of TRTA in Blanco County.
TRTA and its local chapters were highly instrumental in the State House and Senate passing bills that secured the long-term ?nancial viability of the Texas Teacher Retirement System, an important accomplishment since only a small percentage of TRS retirees receive social security payments.
Also, legislators approved a small raise (with a maximum raise of $100 per month) for TRS members who retired before 2004. Since the average state-wide TRS pension bene?t is $1800 per month, the increase is much needed to keep up with in?ation.
This year B-CARE meetings will be held on the fourth Thursday of August, October, February, and May. First meeting of the school year will be Thursday, August 22nd at 11:30 a.m. in the Pecan Street Brew Pub and Restaurant on the Johnson City courthouse square.
