The local garden centers are receiving fall flowers and vegetable transplants. They invite you to choose your plants early.
If you are transplanting tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, etc. you need to protect the you seedlings from the afternoon sun using shade cloth, wood shingles or your favorite shade material. Start seed flast of broccoli, cauliflower, chinese cabbage and other cool season transplants.
Pecan trees need additional water in July, August and September to ensure kernel development.
If you have cats and a garden, you know the problems. The recently tilled soil is the perfect litter box. Try using conifer branches (cedars, pines and juniper) between the garden rows. The prickly needles will keep the cats away.
Tip: Use your leftover coffee or tea (no sugar) added to your dish or bath water. Mix one part coffee to two parts water, and pour on your plants. The coffee grounds can be used for mulch. Till it into the soil or use as a top dressing. It is a good organic fertilizer.
August is the month to prune roses for October blooms. Give them a good feeding of Rose Grow and keep them watered.
