I am so fortunate to be part of this community. People are truly considerate and generous to others.
I would like to address an issue that is becoming more of a crisis every day. We have a true humanitarian issue developing within our own community. The number of stray, homeless, and feral animals that make Blanco County home continues to grow at an alarming rate. Dogs are more fortunate than cats. I assume because they are naturally more trusting, people will help an abandoned canine on many occasions....but not all. Cats are a different story. It seems every week I hear another sad tale of people driving out from Austin or SA and dumping a batch of kittens. I have stopped trying to make sense of the cruelty we perpetuate on the animal kingdom every day. I do everything I can to make a difference in the lives of a few cats here and there.
I would like to bring attention to the Blanco County Cat Coalition (512 318-5875; P.O. Box 757, Johnson City, 78636). This is a truly wonderful organization, run by caring, hard-working, blessed folks. Only they realize the true crisis this issue has become. Our society raises young people to believe that animals are disposable toys. And when we stop at the Lowe’s or the gas station, we see the cats scurrying near the dumpsters hoping someone leaves a bit of food. But most people have become desensitized....they no longer even notice the starving animals in need of a bit of compassion. And the greatest tragedy is that this problem can be avoided if people would only neuter and spay their animals.
At this point I would like to ask everyone who is able to please reach into your heart and your wallet, and donate to the Cat Coalition. I see no shame in begging for a Christian cause. Please help address this problem in our community. Help these volunteers trap and neuter/spay these animals, and feed the hungry. Every one of God's creatures deserves to not starve to death. Please do the right thing, good people of Blanco County. Thank you.
