An evangelist of the early 1900s who was known as being very frugal and had recently had major surgery was travelling back home aboard a ship. He was travelling 3rd class and someone said, "Considering your circumstances, why are you travelling 3rd class?" The man said, "Because there is not a 4th class."
Men often make sacrifices in order to obtain a specific goal. Consider for a moment the great sacrifice of our Lord on our behalf. In Hebrews 10:1-3 the writer contrasts the animal sacrifices of the Old Testament with the sacrifice of our Lord. He concludes, "It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins." The old sacrifices were but a shadow of the real substance we find in Christ. The people of old took from their own flocks and herds whatever it was that God commanded, but in the end we need not what we can provide, for only what heaven provides is sufficient. The animals were brought against their will, tied and bound, and led to the altar, but Christ gave Himself freely. The nails did not hold him there, but His great love for us.
