Even as I type this, the men are patching and painting the Peyton Colony School, installing windows, doors, and doing their best to preserve the school from the elements. Everyone is invited to take a look-see on April 6, 2013, at 2:30 p.m., and hear first-hand what it was like attending the school from those who actually did.
That’s right! This is a call to one and all for the students who attended Peyton Colony School to come reminisce about the good ol’ school days, while being filmed by Barney Cline, in order that we preserve the history and integrity of the students and schoolhouse. The Peyton Colony Heritage Foundation will present a copy of the DVD to each of the libraries in Blanco County, so everyone will be able to listen to the students share their recollections from now on. It’s too bad we didn’t think about this a long time ago when all the students were still able to share their stories, but you know what? There are about a dozen or more that Lawrence and Sister have been able to think of, and we will be contacting them.
You can help us get the word out by sharing this news with those you know. Please have them call Lawrence at 830-833-4183, and if we’re not home, ask them to leave their name and telephone number on the recording. We don’t have caller ID, so tell them to be sure to leave their name and number so we can call back and get their mailing address.
Everyone is invited to join us for this historic moment, and share some refreshments inside the schoolhouse.
The event will begin at 2:30pm with a brief meeting of the Blanco County Historical Commission in the fellowship hall of Mt. Horeb Baptist Church, located at 593 Peyton Colony Road, off of Farm Road 165. This is approximately 9 miles east of Blanco. Turn left onto Peyton Colony Road and you will see the schoolhouse and church on the left, once you go through a cattle guard and go around the curve in the road!
Then we will walk over to the school to talk a walk back in time to when the school was alive with students learning their ABCs and 123s.
Afterwards we will caravan over to the Peyton Colony cemetery for a brief tour.
