Serving as a board member of a community or governmental board is rewarding and demanding. Some boards require training, and all require time and interest from volunteer board members. The recent loss of Jack Felps and Rebecca Howerton left two voids in community boards and efforts to fill needs in community boards is an ongoing challenge. At the present time there is a vacancy on the Blanco County Emergency Service District #2 board and several other boards in Blanco. Some board members are appointed, and others are elected. The challenge is finding people who are willing to serve.
As I have talked to friends about serving on a board, I find that few want to serve, and it occurred to me that newcomers to Blanco may want to serve and not know how to become involved. I would like to invite individuals wanting to serve on a community board, male, female, young, old, to contact me or your county commissioner and let your interest be known. I will keep a list of interested persons and forward that list on to the county commissioners court or to community boards that contact me for names. The column Ongoing Community Events in the Blanco County News lists many of these boards and the times that they meet.
Some of the boards in Blanco include: Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society (which is selecting new board members this Thursday night at the annual general membership meeting at 7:00 pm in the Old Blanco County Courthouse). A newcomer, Jenny Bailey, will be doing a program and new board members will be elected. Everyone is invited to attend and become a member.
Other boards (and this is not all inclusive) include: Blanco County Child Protection and Family Advocacy Board, CASA, Blanco VFD, Blanco EMS, Blanco ESD #2, Blanco Historical Society, Blanco Library, Blanco Historic Cemetery Association, Gem of the Hills, and others. All of these boards have willing volunteers but each year may need new board members. If you would like to serve on a board (or if you are a board needing board members) please send me an email, call me, or contact your county commissioner, Paul Granberg, 833-1077 or John Wood, 833-5331 . My contact information is Ann Hall 833-9915 or hall@texas-skies.com. Please consider sharing your skills; you are a valuable asset. The pay is zero, but the rewards can be “priceless.”
