The Uptown Blanco Art Center staged its Second Annual Quilt Show,“Wildflowers,” on October 12 – 14, 2012. Over 100 quilts were featured in various categories, with 60 of those quilts being entered in juried judging. The Best of Show was awarded to Helen Rode. Over $2,000 worth of prizes was awarded to the winners, while some of the attendees were awarded door prizes throughout the show’s run. More than 500 visitors and guests attended the show.
A highlight of the event was the display of a quilt once owned by Lady Bird Johnson, presented by the kindness of Shirley James, Lady Bird’s former executive assistant. The exhibit was enhanced by the loan of additional Lady Bird artifacts from the LBJ National Park in Johnson City.
Also on exhibit was a celebrity car quilt for the Center’s Smart Car. The quilt was created to support breast cancer awareness and was signed by the celebrities who donated personal clothing for its creation. Celebrities include Twiggy, Sara Cox, and Elizabeth Hurley, among others. The Johnson City Quilt Guild provided volunteers to assist with the show, as well as with a country store and quilt raffles.
Activities presented by the Art Center included various demonstrations and a fabric pumpkin make-and-take.
Plans are already in the works for the 2013 show, “The Sky,” which will be held October 11 – 13. The 2013 show will feature cash prizes, national and internationally-known quilting teachers, raffle quilts, and a silent auction. Preliminary entries are already being received for that event.
