On Saturday, March 9, Blanco County 4H Shooting Education will be hosting the Texas State Rifle Association’s annual BB-Gun State Match. This is an event that has been ongoing for several years past. In the past few years, the state match has been hosted by the Gillespie County 4H Shooting Team. The Blanco County 4H Shooting Education, which is led by Gordon Dowdy, has decided to host this years and next year’s State BB-Gun Match. The event will be held at the Blanco County Fairgrounds.
There will be many Texas county teams, from all over the state, in Johnson City for the event. This should be a boost to the local economy since competition will start with the air rifle event on Friday evening, followed by the BB-gun completion on Saturday.
Blanco County’s team will be competing in the state match. Ages range from 8 to 14 in boys and girls, with hopes of scoring high enough to be able to compete at the 4-H BB-Gun national match. Blanco County’s shooting team has sent teams to the Nationals back in 2009 as well as in 2011, with hopes of some of the outgoing shooters being able to go back, this year, for a last hurrah.
After the match, there will be an awards banquet that will be accepting donations per plate.
If you haven’t seen the competition, come on out and check out these little “Dead Eyes.” Bring your kids, who knows, they may want to participate next year. There will be concessions that will be selling breakfast tacos, hamburgers, cokes, bottled water, and chips. There will also be some souvenir t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to the Blanco County 4-H Shooting Education to assist in travel should the team make it to Nationals.
