Happy New Year! It seems that December was much shorter than past years. Our weather in Texas is typical Texas. One day freezing, the next day 70-80 degrees. The “Snow Birds” that visit the Blanco Area still think our area is the best place to be!

It’s time to: Prepare garden soil for Winter and Spring planting. Cut Asparagus plants to the ground. This is also the time to add asparagus roots to the garden. Be sure the planting bed is a permanent location. The asparagus will be in this location for a long while. Fertilize and water regularly.

Prune roses to shape and remove broken limbs. DO NOT prune climbing roses until they have bloomed in the spring. This rule is for all spring blooming flowers, shrubs, and trees. You will remove the buds that are made during the winter for flowers.

Prune dead and broken limbs from shade trees, peach and plum trees need to maintain their bowl and vase shape.

Remove vertical shoots (water spouts) from apply trees, only minimal limbs removed from fig, pecan, pear and pomegranate.

Plant cool season flowers and vegetable transplants. Some winter color is pansy, viola, Johnny ump ups, snapdragons, petunias, flowering cabbage and kale. The nursery should have a variety to choose for pots or gardens.

Grape vines must be cut back 80-85 percent. Remaining vines should be secured to strong supports.

New transplants must be fertilized and watered on a regular basis.

Keep Winter landscape simple, tidy and uncluttered. It paints a picture of the garden at rest.
