Being married to a builder, I love to give him my list of ideas or wants. Here is one of my favorites that just so happens to be getting more popular; mixing three elements (earth fire, and water) in the backyard haven. A lot of us use them separately, but how about combining them? I will start by defining each element as I see it.
Earth is the dirt, plants, pots with plants, trees, rocks, gravel/stone paths, wood, and even wood furniture. Most of us have one or more of these items already in our backyard.
Fire is the fire pits, full custom fireplaces, built-in bar-b-que areas, or even chimineas. These might also be found on porches or in the backyard already.
Water is defined as ponds, fountains, hot tubs, pools, and homemade streams. Water is the most soothing of the three elements. There is nothing like listening to running water or hopping into a hot tub or pool. Small or large water elements can make a big difference.
Now think about mixing one or more of these for ambiance. We stayed at a place years ago that combined the fire pit with a fountain (this is what started all my ideas). The structure was amazing and yet simple. It was the draw in the courtyard. If you surround this fire pit and fountain with stone work, you will be putting the three elements together. Designs can be small, medium or large. If you like, these designs can be taken inside your home as well, but done differently. Cost can be minimum to extravagant, always depending on your budget.
There are so many opinions in designing a haven with these three elements. Close your eyes and picture that amazing backyard glowing under the fire pit, with running water, and secluded among the trees and plants. Add some hot chocolate or a glass of wine and enjoy. And to think…you never have to leave your backyard, oh my…
