The Denim & Diamonds Gala held on October 18 at the Old Blanco County Courthouse was a huge success according to Gala Chairperson Debra DuPont. “We raised $37,448 towards the repair and restoration of the Courthouse. This is $4,000 more than we netted at last year’s event.”
Debra and Gala Co-Chairperson Dean Swarthout thanked the community of Blanco for their generosity and commitment to keeping Blanco’s historic landmark building on the Square from falling into neglect and disrepair. They also thanked the Gala committee: George Clary, Jan Brieger, Cornelia England, Carolyn Geiler and Karen Watson for their dedication and hard work in putting on the biggest fundraiser event of the year for the Old Courthouse.
“With these new funds we have been able to contract David Hiser Construction for badly needed repairs to the Courthouse attic in preparation for restoring the roof”, Debra added.
The Old Blanco County Preservation Society is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation which has assumed the responsibility for maintaining and preserving our beloved Old Courthouse since 1987 when it’s dismantling for use in private construction was imminent. The unique structure designed by Ruffini and constructed in 1885 has withstood decommissioning as a county courthouse, subsequent use as a bank, hospital, restaurant, and even a vacant building.
It’s revival as a viable and integral part of Blanco is a testament to the spirit and pride of the citizens and business community of Blanco who appreciate the true historic value of this iconic landmark building. The Old Blanco County Courthouse has become a popular Hill Country wedding and events venue, movie and television location, host of monthly Market Days, annual Lavender Fest and Wild Woman’s Weekend while also serving as a museum and offering downstairs office space.
