Come celebrate the art and artistry of Quilting, yesterday and today, at the 4th Annual Uptown Blanco Quilt Show themed “Heirlooms, Past and Present”. The show opens Friday, October 10, and runs through Saturday, October 11. In addition to the entry quilts on display, there will be special exhibits of quilts by Betty Alderman and pieces from the 2014 Hoffman Challenge.

Artist Betty Alderman was a renowned quilter and one of the founders of Quilting in America. She specialized in redwork, sunbonnet, and 19th century folk art designs. Sadly, Alderman passed away in 2013, so the Textile Studio is working with her daughter and step-daughter to showcase examples of her work, as a tribute to her in this year’s event.

Started in 1988, the Hoffman Challenge has grown to be a premiere traveling quilt, clothing, and doll collection. Every year a brand new, never before seen, fabric is selected, and quilters are challenged to produce an original design using this fabric as a focus. Uptown Blanco is excited to be able to display the traveling quilt exhibit and traveling doll exhibit at this year’s show.

The Betty Alderman and Hoffman Challenge exhibits will be on display in the Ballroom of the Uptown Blanco Complex.

“This year we are featuring some antique quilts as well as the spectacular current ones we always have.” says Andrea Meegan, Textile Studio Manager. “Quilting is one of the only forms of art that really has it’s roots in America. We wanted to celebrate not only recent pieces but also antiques that celebrate quilting history.”

The quilt show entries and vendor booths will be located in the Old Blanco County Courthouse. The Best of Show Quilt will be awarded a $250 cash and a gift certificate to the Uptown Blanco Textile Studio for $250. Vendors will have yards upon yards of fabulous fabric, sewing notions, patterns, woven wearables, art cloth, jewelry, and much more.

Area guilds and non-profit vendors will also have booths at this year’s event. The hometown guild, Blanco Quilters on the Square, will have their “Lavender Dreams” raffle quilt, (inspired by Blanco’s title of the “Lavender Capital of Texas”) on display. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The winner will be announced at the close of the quilt show on Saturday.

Whether you’re an experienced quilter, beginner, or perhaps you’ve suddenly been inspired by the quilting, make a stop by the Uptown Blanco Textile Studio and enjoy the beautiful quilts and wall to wall fabric on display.

Show hours are Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11, from 10 am to 5 pm. There will be a $5 entrance fee.
