Exciting improvements have been taking place at Blanco State Park. Most recently, a new walking trail was developed at the east end of the park. The trail begins near the Naturescape Activity Center and works its way east past the old stone pump house, leading to a nice walk to the lower part of the Kendalia Road dam. Additionally, an observation deck was built on the trail, giving walkers the opportunity to relax, observe wildlife and their habitat, and enjoy a beautiful view of the Blanco River. Texas Conservation Corps members stayed at the park and assisted Texas Parks and Wildlife staff in developing the trail. The Corps is a subsidiary of American Youth Works, which is staffed by young workers in their late teens and early 20’s. The group has been working throughout Texas, recently completing several projects in Davis Mountains State Park. Take advantage of the cooler weather and check out the new trail!
The same American Youth Works crew also built a bridge over the eroded area of the lower Caswell Trail. This project was necessary due to severe erosion and potential additional damage through flooding to both the upper and lower trails. The completed project will include rock-filled wire baskets to mediate the severe erosion on the hill above the bridge. These improvements will contribute to a safer and more enjoyable walk on the Caswell Trail. By the way, the next Saturday morning nature walks with Marcy Westcott, a certified Master Naturalist, are scheduled for October 11 and 25.
