The 2014 football season opened with a big win for the Blanco Panthers as they defeated the visiting Canyon Lake Hawks 35 to 7. The Panthers scored in every quarter while holding the Hawks to just 153 yards in total offense.

Blanco scored the season’s first TD on a 29 yard pass play from QB McKay Adamson to Colton Elrod with just over a minute left in the first quarter. A missed PAT made the score 6-0 going into the second quarter.

On the Panther’s next offensive possession, Blanco used just two plays to get into the end zone as Elrod scored his second touchdown of the night on a 21 yard run. Adamson then connected with Andrew Burgess for the 2 point conversion to make the halftime score 14-0.

Blanco opened the second half with its third scoring drive of the night, driving 54 yards in 8 plays to score on an Adrien Dominguez 10 yard run. Justin Requenes added the PAT and increased Blanco’s lead to 21-0.

The final quarter saw the Hawks put together a 10 play, 84 yard drive to score on a Josh DeVries 5 yard run. Mike Thorpe added the extra point to cut the Panther lead to 21-7. Blanco, however, wasted little time answering the Hawk’s scoring drive as the Panthers closed out the game with Colton Elrod’s third TD of the night on a 5 yard run, as well as, a 15 yard scoring pass from Adamson to Jordon Wagner. Requenes converted both PAT’s to make the final score 35-7.

Offensively, Blanco totaled 334 yards in offense and picked up 20 first downs with Elrod leading the way with 134 yards on the ground. Dominguez also picked up 100 yards on 15 carries while Adamson would add 88 yards through the air on 4 of 7 passing.

Defensively, the Panthers held Canyon Lake to just 1 first down in the first half and only 6 total for the entire game with 4 of those coming on their lone scoring drive. Blanco also forced 6 punts in addition to taking the ball over on downs in two other possessions.

Blanco will be on the road this week as they travel to Comfort to take on the rival Bobcats. Comfort was defeated at home last week by Sonora, but is looking to rebound with a strong effort against the Panthers. Kick-off in Comfort is set for 7:30 pm.
