Beginners Mind Part 1 (Yoga and You)

By Natalie Hain

I’m dedicating the next two articles to the beginner and to the beginners mind. In my experience as a yoga teacher and student I know it can be hard to come to class because you are not comfortable in your body or you think you have nothing else to learn. Taking the attitude of a beginner in your life and yoga practice is an inspiring, profound and foundational part yoga.

As your body transforms from young to old, there are days you may look in the mirror and think is that me? In these moments we remember that no matter how old or experienced we are, there are still moments of surprise. In these moments we begin to see ourselves with new eyes, a beginners mind. Having a yoga practice readies you for these situations. It humbles you because there is rarely a day you won’t feel like a beginner while on your mat.

While teaching I come back to basics often Practicing with a beginners mind is much more challenging for me as a student. I feel frustrated when something is hard today but was easy yesterday or five years ago. In those moments of frustration I practice with a beginners mind. I remember that each moment is a beginning and I continue on with the faith that tomorrow will be better. I give myself permission to be a beginner. There is no such thing as a perfect pose, a perfect life, a perfect friend or a perfect spouse. There are ALWAYS places to deepen and grow in a pose just like in life or in our relationships. Our life ebbs and flows, as will your practice.

Be okay with where you are now and allow yourself your shortcomings. Have faith in yourself that you can transform if you have the perseverance to show up to class. If you never start you’ll never enjoy the moments of clarity and ease yoga brings. Yoga isn’t about standing on your hands and putting your legs behind your head. Its about learning to live in your own skin. The yogic journey is about those brief moments when you remember who you are and why you’re here. Yoga will give you the tools to deal with the ups and downs of life. Yoga is an honest, loving friend that will be there for you no matter what. “Practice and all is coming.” ~ Guru Pattabhi Jois
