Fourteen boys and girls from Blanco Cub Scout Pack 497 and Frontier Girls Troop 246 attended Scout Day Camp June 10-13 in Stonewall, at the LBJ State Park. The theme this year was Gizmos, Gadgets, and Goo. Scouts made Gak by combining Borax and white glue, did experiments with Mentos and soda, and learned about the properties of dry ice. They designed their own bridges, using dry spaghetti and marshmallows, then created catapults using Popscicle sticks and rubber bands. The principles of aerodynamics were taught by building paper airplanes and flying kites. The scouts had a great time learning the rules of Ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and tennis as they played these with their dens. All scouts also got to participate in archery, BB Gun Marksmanship, and fishing. No scout camp would be complete without practical lessons about conservation. The campers learned about the principles of Leave No Trace and put them into action by picking up trash, making sure the park area looked as clean or better than before camp began. Composting was taught by having each scout make their own worm bin to take home. Each afternoon, all scouts got to cool off with a swim in the Stonewall Pool.
