Kristi Walker was sworn in as Blanco’s new City Secretary on April 8, 2014. She follows in the footsteps of 20 plus year veteran, Bobbie Mowery, and she understands those are some big shoes to fill.
“There’s a big learning curve.” said Walker. With an election coming up May 10, Walker told us she hasn’t had much experience with the political aspect of the job, but the City has contracted with Mowery to come in and train Walker on that and other aspects. Walker does have over 20 years administrative and bookkeeping experience. “I love working with people. I have strong reporting and analyzing skills.” Walker says she is also looking into getting a City Secretary Certification, attending election school, Small City classes, and has joined a City Secretary Group.
“Everybody [at the city] has been great and helpful… welcoming me in.” said Walker.
Walker moved to Austin in 2012, after living in Florida for 20 years. Her husband Joe’s family lives in Johnson City. She worked as Operations Coordinator for Sorenson Communications where part of her job description included many administrative duties as well as scheduling and reporting. They later moved closer to the family, but when the commute began to interfere with her family’s schedule, Kristi started to look for a new job.
“We have a 2 year old boy, Jackson, and a 4 year old girl, Madalyn. I would have to leave [for work in Austin], sometimes before my son would get up from bed. My daughter kept asking me, ‘Can you take me to school?’ It was hard, I wanted to be closer for them.”
Now that she has found a job closer to home, Walker and her family are looking for a house within Blanco County to settle permanent roots. “We’re here to stay.” said Walker.
