Blanco High School’s golf team is going to State!

For the second year in a row, Blanco’s boys qualified for the State tournament by finishing third at the Region IV meet held at Quail Creek Country Club in San Marcos. Fifteen schools representing Districts 25-32 competed.

“We went into the Region IV golf tournament with the eighth best score district, and came out with third place,” said golf coach Scott Balmos.

“Our boys played well both days while the other teams in front of us fell apart from the pressure.”

“On day one we swept all three teams we were paired with, and on day two we beat two out of three and secured our trip to the biggest tournament of the year!”

East Bernard finished first at the tournament with a two-day round of 709. Lago Vista finished second with a 719, and Blanco finished third with a 729. The same three teams advanced last year as well. Fourth place finisher was Bishop with a 736.

“Last year was a milestone accomplished for our golf program,” said Balmos. “This year was a pleasant surprise.”

“We are excited about playing for a state title in golf for Blanco ISD this year, and with four out of the five boys on the team coming back, next year should be another trip to the state tournament if we play our cards right!”

Junior Kyle Gray said,”Being one of the top ten golf teams in the state is a pretty good feeling! We want to dominate Region IV in golf!”

Aaron Uballe said,” I’m going to shoot my best round at the state tournament. I like the pressure!”

Balmos added,”Some sports and coaches and kids never get the opportunity to play for a state title! We are lucky in Blanco.”

“Football state champions and runners-up, baseball runners-up, track qualifiers, tennis state champs, and now back-to-back golf state tournaments.”

“Only twelve teams qualify each year in each division. We finished eighth last year, and look to improve on that this year.”

“It is with great pride that I do my job and the results are proof! Thanks to all my former players and to the coaches on staff that support our golf program!”
