The Outhouse (Focus on Faith)

By John Kinslow, minister, Blanco church of Christ

A farm boy was feeling a little mischievous and decided to turn over the outhouse. The father lined his boys up and begin to question them. The guilty son quickly confessed and then said, "George Washington cut down the cherry tree, but he didn't get into trouble because he told the truth, and dad I'm here to tell the truth." His father said, "That might be, but George's father wasn't in the cherry tree."

Paul said, "Have I therefore become your enemy by telling you the truth" (Galatians 4:16)? Paul did not gain any pleasure in upsetting the Galatians, but he did hope to gain their understanding of the matter. It wasn't personal, it was just the truth. Jesus spoke to His Father in Heaven in prayer and said, "Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word it truth" (John 17:17). Anger can become our enemy when it comes to hearing and applying the word of God to our life. Thus the admonition, "Be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God" (James 1:19-20).

Communication: Reading the word. Comprehension: Understanding the word. Confidence: Trusting in what God says. Change: Applying what God teaches.

Come to hear and to learn what the Lord would have you to do.
