Are you getting ready to do a construction job? And have you tentatively booked a contractor for a given date? There are a few things to keep in mind when you have selected your contractor and established what and when you want to do your project.
Let’s presume you have already defined your construction needs, have interviewed contractors, selected the contractor, established the pricing, and time line to start and complete the job. What all is involved now? And let’s say you were going to be adding a bedroom onto your home. This will involve the following type of workers: Foundation, plumbers, electricians, sheet rockers, painters, roofers, etc. And your general contractor has to oversee each one during this project.
From a contractor’s view at this point, they have already done a lot of preliminary work on possible designs for your project and more. And once you tell them – Let’s do this. They go to work on all the final plans and scheduling. They have already got pricing to do your job. They have already created a schedule and lined out all the subcontractors or workers to get the job started and completed. Scheduling is very important to meet all deadlines. The contractor must know what comes first and juggle the plumbers and electricians in to do their part before the painter. And in turn, these contractors are establishing all other jobs with other builders and individuals too. It’s like a ripple effect or dominoes to getting the job schedules. So if it is cancelled, you have to think about the waves it could cause with other jobs and people working.
There are times people have to cancel, which is understandable. And, believe me, we all understand when one does need to cancel based on health, money, job, family, etc. Hopefully the job can be re-scheduled at another time. Just try to give your contractor as much notice as possible so they can fill that spot with another job.
Doing a construction job has got to work in everyone’s schedule. Most contractors will do everything possible to make the project a pleasant one. Just keep in mind, if you have established a friendly / honest working relationship up front, all can be worked out so much easier. Someone once gave me this saying and it is so true: “Honesty is the cornerstone of all success, without which confidence and ability to perform shall cease to exist. “
Great words to remember. Finally, do the best you can to stick with a schedule and know that it affects many others besides your point of contact. And know that most contractors will do everything they can to make you happy because they work off referrals from you. Any construction project needs to be a pleasant one. Happy building.
