There have been lots of activity in your Fire Department the past few weeks. This past Saturday, your department, along with Blanco EMS and assistance from the Spring Branch and Johnson City departments, responded to a dispatch call reporting a trailer carrying 11 round bales of hay was on fire at the entrance to the Landon’s Crossing subdivision. The response was quick and our firefighters began dousing the burning bales with water and foam. Luckily, no one was harmed and no property, beyond the hay bales, was ruined. At one time, there were 4 tankers, 2 engines, and 2 brush trucks assisting the firefighting effort. It took well over 2 hours to control the flames and 14 hours before all hot spots were out. The BVFD thanks Spring Branch and Johnson City departments for their able assistance and Blanco EMS for the rehab.

The department is now part of the Social Media ‘revolution’! BVFD has a Facebook and Twitter page. We will include pertinent information such as weather alerts, school closing, call status and temporary road closers, and burn ban status. Follow us for up to the minute information. This week is National Severe Weather Preparation Week (March 2-8, 2014) sponsored by NOAA and FEMA. In support of it, we encourage you to be prepared for severe weather by knowing your/our risk, planning (such as preparing a disaster supply kit for your home and family) and taking action. Lastly, the Blanco Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fund raising event, the BVFD Fish Fry, will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Yett Park from 4 – 8 p.m. We have been working hard in planning an event that will include both great food and fun. Our firefighters will demonstrate some of their techniques, we will have a helicopter on static display, and there will be music and dancing. The department is raffling off several valuable rifles and shotguns. Tickets for the raffle are available throughout town. Please mark your calendars and support your local fire department.
