What began as a modest business owned by a Johnson City couple has turned into one of the most successful and longest running businesses in town, Whittington’s Jerky.

In 1959 founders, husband and wife team D.J. and Gertrude Whittington opened the Johnson City Locker Plant, offering meat processing, smoked meats and smoked sausage.

Just for fun and part-time D.J. Whittington started making the original beef jerky, that is today famous and loved all over the world.

Since its June 2000 founding, Whittington’s Jerky and General Store’s second generation owners Sam and Susan Whittington have had some significant milestones, including honors, awards, and 8 new recipes in 4 different types of meats.

“It’s really amazing when I look back at where we started 50 years ago and where we are today. I recall my dad D.J. Whittington once told someone back in ’62, ‘I’m not trying to see how fast I can make it, I’m trying to see how good I can make it.’ Well, today we are determined to stand by that promise, that we would provide the best service to our customers.” said Sam Whittington, owner and vice president.

As we continue to build on the 50 years of service to our customers, we’re excited about what the future holds. There are opportunities to explore new innovations and to continue to grow our business, said Susan Whittington, owner and president.

Sam and Susan took what his dad made for fun and dreamed bigger. Now fifty years later, Whittington’s is one of the leading jerky companies.
