Panthers Take 2nd Place in Blanco Tournament (Sports)

The Panther boys basketball team placed 2nd in their own Blanco Tournament held January 2-4, 2014. Eight teams played in the BHS tournament including Blanco, Fredericksburg Heritage, Mason, Canyon Lake, Johnson City, Port Aransas, Geronimo Navarro, and Llano.

The Panthers soundly defeated Fredericksburg Heritage 64-30 in the first round on Thursday, January 2. Kyle Sauceda controlled the post position for Blanco scoring 20 points. Brett Champion added 10, with Carlin Green scoring 9. Thursday afternoon Blanco posted another overwhelming win downing the Mason Punchers 75-38. Green led the team firing in 16 points. Jacob McCaslin scored 13, with Sauceda making 12.

On Friday the Panthers fell to the Canyon Lake Hawks 58-68. Sauceda paced the team scoring 18. Green followed closely shooting 16 points. Champion scored 8.

In a semifinal game Blanco faced the Llano Yellow Jackets. The Panthers and Jackets had previously played on December 30, 2013 with the Jackets taking the win 51-66. In that game Green led the Panthers scoring 17 points. Jacob McCaslin made 14 points, with Sauceda adding 12. Blanco played strong defense in this rematch taking the win 50-44. Sauceda scored 14 points with Green adding 13. David Ramirez made 8 points.

The win over Llano placed Blanco in the finals against the Port Aransas Marlins coached by former Blanco teacher Joe Kocurek. The Marlins defeated the Panthers 55-65. Sauceda fired in 18 points with Jacob McCaslin scoring 11. Champion added 7. Port Aransas won the tournament with Blanco taking second. Kyle Sauceda was named All-Tournament for the Panthers.

On Monday, January 6, 2014, Blanco defeated the Lampasas Badgers 58-49 Sauceda ripped the nets scoring 21 points. Green sank 12 points with Champion adding 11.

Jacob McCaslin scored 6 and Josh McCaslin and Tyler Schlinke each made 3 points, Trent Dechert scored 2.

The Junior Varsity lost to the Badgers 32-71. James Rodriguez and Hugo Rodrigues each scored 6 points, with Dylan Tesch adding 5. Robbie Arlitt, Diego Alegria, and John Cross Caldwell each scored 4 points while Dawson Albin made 3.

The Panthers begin District 27-AA play Friday, January 10, 2014 hosting the Ingram Warriors. The JV plays at Blanco Middle School at 5pm with the Varsity tip-off set for 8 pm in the high school gym.
