What Do We See (Focus on Faith)

By John Kinslow, minister, Blanco church of Christ

We need sight. We can be and often are blinded to the truth. Satan convinces us that our sins are not so bad. We fail to see the need for spiritual preparation. Procrastination becomes the rule of life. Scripture is read or heard but quickly dismissed in favor of family or tradition, yet only God's truth can set us free (John 8:31-32).

We need hindsight. We must learn from the generations that have gone before us. Civilizations of great power and learning have disappeared into the dust of the earth. Moral collapse has brought empires to their knees. The empires of men, no matter how extensive, are temporary, and only God's truth and kingdom can endure (Daniel 2:44; Hebrews 12:28)

We need insight. Education can be bought but not so with wisdom, or common sense. It has been said that reading the fine print will give you a education and not reading it will give you experience. Insight allows us see the end of a matter before it develops and thus deliver us from foolish choices. True knowledge and wisdom begin with honoring God (Proverbs 1:7).

We need foresight. Without vision we perish (Proverbs 29:18). What we are to become we must first see. God has given us hope which is indeed the anchor of the soul (Hebrews 6:19). At one in the same time, we are made steadfast because of it, and also propelled to constant renewal. Life can be understood backwards, but must be lived forward (Philippians 3:13-14).
