Did your pear and redbud trees bloom for the second time this fall? Mine did, again. They did it last year, but they bloom again in the Spring.
I love this Fall weather, but we will have Winter soon. There are several things that need to be done before moving into the greenhouse. It is necessary to trim, and many will need to be re-potted, fertilized and watered.
This time of the year is the most important for fertilizing your lawn and landscape for a healthy growth in the Spring. I use an organic granule. They are slow release and seem to have better results in the Spring.
If you plan to do heavy pruning and trimming of shrubs and hedges, I like to wait until the growing season is over. If they are pruned now, the new growth can set in and the first good freeze can damage the plants.
Remove and rake all the old debris, dead fruit, vegetables, diseased leaves and plants. Place it in a bag and throw it in the trash. If you place it in the compost pile it could spread disease and insects the following season.
Remove tops of asparagus, cut down to the ground. Mulch, compost, or manure is good to cover the plants.
Do not allow leaves to accumulate on the lawn. Rake the leaves and use as mulch or use the lawnmower to shred the leaves, adding fertilizer or compost to spread on the flower gardens or vegetables.
Fill in the beds - the annuals, perennials, and vegetables. Plant pansies, snapdragons, Johnny, stocks, Shasta daisy, larkspur, flowering kale and cabbage. There are several transplants in the nursery for the vegetable garden.
If you plan to plant sage plants (cenizo), look for Lowery’s Legacy. It is a Texas Superstar. It blooms often and produces heavier blooms than the regular native. Superstars undergo extensive tests before being counted a Superstar.
