What Time Is It? (Focus on Faith)

By John Kinslow, minister, Blanco church of Christ

Today our ability to divide and measure time has grown into insane proportions. For example, the atomic cesium clock divides a second into 9,192,631,770 parts. This corresponds to a time measurement accuracy of two nanoseconds per day or one second in 1,400,000 years. I am sure that somewhere, in some field of study, there is a use for this information but most of us get by rather well with the – ‘around noon’ – type of arrangement.

The way we keep time can be deceptive. Each week begins with a Sunday, but it’s not the same Sunday. The days do not repeat themselves; they are finite, and we lose them one by one. You set the alarm and when you wake, it’s the same time as yesterday morning, but not really. Time is not cyclical but linear. When the hour passes and the day is done, it’s gone forever, never to return.

Indeed our life is “just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). Divine instruction says that we “number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). We often behave like we will have an eternity of Mondays, but we don’t. Where are you today in your relationship to the Lord? Isn’t it about time for you to follow Him?
