The Blanco Volunteer EMS and Texans In Motion at Scott & White Healthcare teamed up to offer a free car seat and booster seat inspection on Friday, June 28.
Families were invited to make an appointment to have their car seats and booster seats inspected for proper installation, height, weight and age requirements and recalls. Sixteen childrens’ seats were inspected during the event and twelve new seats were given to those in need. Parents were also educated on how to properly install the seats for their children.
Several Blanco EMS, Marble Falls Area EMS, Bulverde/Spring Branch EMS and personnel of Le Fleur Transportation took a four day course on car seat safety and inspection. Friday served as the final day of the course and the participants are now certified.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children ages 2 to 14. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 73 percent of all child passenger restraints — more than 80 percent of car seats and about 40 percent of booster seats — are used incorrectly. Properly used, a car seat reduces the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. A booster seat reduces the risk of death by 59 percent for children ages 4 to 8.
Look for an information booth at the next Market Days on the square for tips on how to properly install your childs car or booster seat.
Blanco EMS will now be able to hold car and booster seat inspections at local events. Check the community calendar to keep informed of the next date.
